Two worldwide corporations are partnering up together for the future. It was revealed by the Hyundai Company that they’ve partnered with Uber, developing a concept vehicle that could be maintained for an Air-Taxi Service. This information comes after the automaker displayed a full-scale model for their aerial vehicle at the Consumers Electronics Show. Showcased on January 10th, this vehicle plans to differentiate how humanity engages with their ride-sharing services. However, it should be mentioned that Hyundai has worked towards a flyable vehicle for several years. Previous concepts include Urban Air Mobility, which resembles the model that was shown as CES 2020.

The Hyundai Company and Uber Corporation are dedicating themselves towards this concept. It was confirmed during the announcement that infrastructure is ready for development. This would allow for a ground-based service that would act like a Taxi Hub. Consumers could drive their electric vehicles to the hub, where charging stations will be provided. Purpose-Built Vehicles will also be provided at these hubs, acting like airport transportation. Afterwards, traverse to the roof of the building and a landing pad will be provided. There wasn’t any confirmation if these vehicles will be autonomous or piloted by humankind.

Hyundai will implement a specialized technology, which is patented and owned by the Chinese conglomerate. The technology that powers these flying-vehicles will be called EVTOL, meaning Electric Vertical Takeoff & Landing. This revolutionary technology doesn’t require high-powered jets for takeoff, instead of maintaining rotors that are managed by an electric engine. Helicopters work similarly to the Hyundai UAM, with the Uber Corporation providing this Chinese company millions for funding. Several concepts have been displayed since their partnership began, with the endgame to provide a product that works like an “Autonomous Personal Drone”.

Model Details

The Hyundai S-A1 will be the first concept put towards potential production. It would seat five individuals, including the sixth position for a pilot. Four rotary systems will be maintained, with the requirement of two needed. This provided additional support in the case of a rotor failure. However, the confirmation of support systems and pilots indicates that Hyundai won’t provide the autonomous variation for years to come. Regardless, it’s created from lightweight carbon materials with mineral composites. This means the weight is minimal, allowing for a parachute for safety in worst-case scenarios. Uber has confirmed that going forward, they’d like to begin mass manufacturing and being the Air-Taxi industry.
